Born into a merchant family of middling prowess, he soon found himself looking for a way out, having no real interest in commerce; the mediocre representation of the art as practiced by his parents was far from encouraging. Several years of taking advantage of their tendency to lose track of their finances left him with enough money to vanish into the night and enroll in an arcane university the next morning. Ever conscious of the need to excel in order to support himself and keep up his 'missing person' facade, he devoted most of his time there to his studies, spending what little free time he had at the docks gathering news. Intrigued by some of the stories he heard, he started giving thought to the best use of his talents; the idea of joining a ship's crew was starting to appeal to him. Three decades spent studying arcana had left him exceedingly bored with the port city the university resided in; after his mentors finally deemed him ready, he sought and obtained a position on a dwarven warship, running escort to explorers and traders. The position went well, at first; Kern found himself well suited to a sailor's life, enjoying the company of his dwarven shipmates. The sort of dedication to friends and allies that was common amongst the dwarves had been a rarity in his past, and he welcomed the company of others who thought as he did. Yet as the years passed, and the occasions on which they traveled somewhere new diminished, he found himself growing bored yet again; after only seven years aboard the ship, the decision was practically made for him when the warship sustained severe damage in a skirmish with a group of surprisingly organized pirates and had to spend several weeks in drydock being repaired. Unsure of where to go next, and only aware that he wants it to be something different, he has taken up wandering, reasoning that most of the places he has seen have been coastal, and much territory remains new to him even without travelling very far. Appearance: Kern dresses in simple but well-made clothing in dusty shades, and with the brace of daggers slung across his shoulder and the quarterstaff he uses as a walking stick, few would take him for the mage he is. He wears his black hair long, tied at the back, exposing an angular face with deep-set blue eyes. Perpetually calm, and rarely worried by aught but the most grievous insults, he is constantly observing his surroundings, whether searching for the solution to a problem or simply taking in the sights.
