--------------- Garrick \"Just come from the city, eh? \"…Don\'t suppose you met a girl on the road. Tiny, looks a bit foreign, carries around a sword larger than she is? \"Rowan, that\'s right. How\'d you find her? \"No, no, I mean how was she? \"Ah, well, that\'s a given of her nature, in\'t it? Sweet girl. \"No, that\'s fine, just fine. Wouldn\'t expect more. \"…Why? Oh, she\'s - known her since she was a pup, y\'see, came toddling into town on her da\'s leg. Can\'t have been more than five years old, and the two of them settled right in alongside the Costins, eastaways. I mean - we were a bit suspicious, at first, can\'t be too careful these days, but Jorin - that\'s her da - \'s pleasant enough. Bit reserved. Bit loopy, too, but not in a … \'s got this thing about the art of the sword or sommat, the subtle traditional way of…I dunno. Hired himself out to travelers going to the city, as a guard or extra hand or whatnot. Left Rowan with Dame Costin when he was gone, for a week or so at a time. I mean, not - he didn\'t leave her without knowing Dame Costin, course. Absolutely devoted to the girl, and she adores him. \"Started taking her with him when she was, oh, ten, eleven. Wasn\'t \'til just a couple years ago she started carrying around that sword, though. He taught her, see. And, well, he didn\'t always take her with him, and last time he left - \"He ain\'t back. Not for a month. And see, like I said - you know - it\'s only a few days to the city, they weren\'t ever gone for more than a couple weeks. So Rowan - Rowan up and left. Off to the city to find her da…\" --------------- Dame Costin \"Poor girl. Nice one, she is, will carry you twenty miles uphill if she thinks it will make you smile. Don\'t know where she got it, either, because I as sure hell won\'t and neither would that daddy of hers. \"Came in one night, asking for a place to stay. Looked tired. Not just - as if he\'d been through too much. I made him sleep outside. \"What? It was summer, she got to come inside - I\'d children of my own, you know - and you can never be too careful. Jorin ain\'t - ain\'t nothing like his daughter. That sword he says was his mother\'s? I\'ll bet you all I\'ve ever worked for he didn\'t get that thing from no mountain dame a brought up seven children birth to death and one still living. \"That man\'s got a past, and not one I\'d care to know too much about. Nor should she. \"But he\'s different to her. Loves that little girl. \'S why she ran off after him, I suppose. \"No, I\'d no right to stop her. I\'m not - it\'s not - not like I\'m her mother, after all. Not at all. Just because I brought the girl up half her life doesn\'t mean I\'m her mother.\" ---------------- ? \"Rowan? …Oh, the girl with the sword? No, I don\'t know her. Know of her. Left, didn\'t she? \"Good riddance. I mean, not that I\'ve anything against them - I\'m sure they were decent people - just, we\'re a small town, you know. Don\'t need those sort of people. Might attract - trouble, that\'s it. Trouble. \"Always going on about blade magic…wasn\'t elven magic, I\'m sure, just…and lived with Dame Costin, and she\'s a bit odd, everyone knows that… \"We don\'t need them around here. That\'s all.\" ----------- Rowan Every time he left, Da told me not to wait up for him. Said if he didn\'t come back, he wouldn\'t come back, and that was it. Said it was a dangerous business he was in - he didn\'t take me along on the ones he thought too dangerous - and it was just reality he was telling me. For a man so hung up on the Sublime Way, Da was damn practical. Is damn practical. I don\'t remember a time we weren\'t living here. Garrick, down at the tavern, tells me I wasn\'t born here, so there must have been a time. Da never talked about it, though, because he didn\'t want to focus on the past. That\'s what he always said. Says. He doesn\'t want to focus on the past. Never mind that he gave me my granddame\'s sword and told me it was the most precious thing I\'ll ever own. Never mind that he teaches me the ancient languages of monsters, because you can never be sure. Never mind that he talks about the tradition of blade magic dawn to the next, won\'t let up on it when I\'m dead tired from all the exercises he tells me I have to learn. Oh, I love it. Don\'t think I don\'t. There\'s a certain freedom come from being - being good at this. Being able to dance with the sword, step by step and… Now I\'m talking like him. Silly. Da would never take me into the city for long. Said I didn\'t need to go there, wouldn\'t ever need to, that it was dangerous. But I\'ve asked up and down the road, and no sign, and the city was where he was going. So I had to come, see? If he thought I wasn\'t going to wait up, I don\'t know how he thinks he raised me. And Da always said the best way to find things out was to listen, and make friends in the right places. So I did. Said I could run errands, to make myself seem dependable. And the man in that tavern was the one that everyone seemed to respect - brought him things when he asked and such - so looking good to him was the practical thing to do. Right? I don\'t know what the note reads, or why he says there\'s a man in the sewers it needs to be delivered to. But I\'ll find him. It\'s just that I\'m a bit lost…
