Earthly power and wealth, of course, being the hooks to bring in followers, just as Gargauth himself used these concepts to lure Ruatan into his service. Gargauth is denied access to his normal preferred races, but a Rakshasa has similar ideals and is certainly open to the idea of attaining personal power. Since Gargauth's is an exiled god, he is intent on building a following and reclaiming his rightful place as an arch-devil (and even the greatest of the arch-devils, at that). Ruatan is his tool to do so -- if he builds enough of a following, Garguath can gain enough power to overthrow those who exiled him. Ruatan was seduced by Gargauth through the lure of gaining great power and influence -- allowing him to rise as a leader of a new empire, perhaps one that could eventually take over the entire world. In return, his mission is to subvert the plans of reviving the power old gods, taking such power for himself (and by extension, Gargauth). In fact, Gargauth has even promised Ruatan that he himself might be promoted to godhood if he is fully successful. A description of Ruatan himself is somewhat pointless, as he will almost always be in the shape of some humanoid that fits in with his surroundings, and he knows enough languages to pass as a native speaker for most of the humanoid races Having chosen to infiltrate the gnomes, Ruatan's normal appearence will be that of particularly fair gnome -- on the taller side (3' 5"), but slender (40 lbs.), with a relatively light skin tone (dark tan), and golden hair and beard. He further stands out with his githcraft (and hence elaborate) breastplate. Ruatan's "message" to his chosen people will be one of self-reliance, honor, and power. The gods have abandoned them, and have left a world of the survival of the fittest, and Ruatan will lead them to become the fittest. They will become powerful and live like kings (at least, those who are worthy of doing so), building an empire to re-tame the lands for the furtherance of their glory, wealth, and power. He will begin by offering his services in building and fortifying -- using wall of stone and his lyre of building to strengthen and expand the city. In exchange, he will teach them of the "god who still watches", and how each of them has a duty to work together to rebuild a glorious civilization. Of course, eventually, as part of that duty, the weak must be identified and culled, but Ruatan will be patient before going to that step, subtly planting seeds for a later harvest.
